Online service aims to match unemployed with short-term work opportunities

Bruce Gibbons with his new website designed to link unemployed people with part-time work.

A new online programme is hoped to link unemployed Bermudians with short-term work.Bruce Gibbons said the Gibbons Community Day Labour Programme has yet to pick up steam but he believes it will inspire the community to get involved.“I’m hoping that the community will reach out with work, whether it be some chores, or businesses who are not looking for full-time employees but just someone for a couple of days a week,” he said.“I really want to get the community involved in helping with this unemployment problem and get proactive in helping people.”Mr Gibbons said the project was born out of his work in creating a drug and alcohol rehabilitation programme for young people. While trying to get the project moving, it was suggested that he include an entrepreneurial aspect.“What I did was I spun off of that with the Gibbons Community Day Labour Programme,” he said.He said that people looking for work can register free on the programme’s website, listing the type of work they are looking for, along with other types of work that they might be willing to do in the short-term.“Basically, the programme is designed and aimed towards people who are unemployed. It’s not to be mistaken for the hustle truck or anything like that,” he said.“It’s for people who are unemployed from any sector, whether it be painting, construction or even just some skills with a computer. I try to find them work, not necessarily in their field, but work to subsidise that income.”Employers, meanwhile, can sign up to find workers for short-term positions.Asked if there would be any sort of vetting system for employers, he said that everyone sent on a work assignment would bring a form for the employer to fill out, evaluating the quality of the work.“At the end of the day we will look at that and act accordingly,” he said. “Hopefully the result will be that people will love the work done and want to employ the person full-time.”He said that employers involved in the programme would pay those hired through the service — with the programme taking a small portion.“They would be paid at an hourly rate and it would be understood that they would be taking the work at a reduced rate,” he said.“We charge the employers the agreed rate and the difference between that and the reduced rate is used to fund the programme. It’s sort of the way many employment agencies work.“I’m kind of spending my own money right now and doing it out of pocket. I’m trying to fuel the project myself. Hopefully we will be able to get people who are interested in the community to help subsidise the programme.”Useful website: www.daylaborbda.com
