Bermuda messages in bottles reach Norway and Scotland

Two messages in bottles sent off the shores of Bermuda two years ago have resurfaced in Norway and Scotland. An article on Massachusetts news site wpri.com, said the messages were thrown overboard by a Mattapoisett woman on June 4, 2010.“Mary Lou Manley went sailing off the coast of Bermuda. She put messages in two sealed rum bottles in memory of her longtime partner, Ken McKenzie, who had recently died from cancer, and tossed them off a boat. She never figured they'd be found, but they were,” the article reads. One bottle was found in Scotland “a while back”. The second resurfaced on a beach in Holkestad, Norway in August, having travelled some 3,700 miles."I hoped that one of them would be found, but I never in my wildest dreams thought they would both make landfall and they would be found," Ms Manley is quoted as saying. She’d placed several rolled-up strips of paper in the bottles. One read: “If you find this, bring it to Yesterday’s Restaurant/Alehouse in Newport, RI and toast Ken McKenzie, a wonderful friend and sailor.”Other strips in the bottle were signed by friends; one had Ms Manley’s e-mail address on it.She said that when she received an e-mail from Norway she became excited."I calmed myself down a little bit, but as soon as I opened it up and read the woman's words — I knew it was the real deal," Ms Manley said. That initial contact sparked ongoing e-mail correspondence between her and the finder, Anne-Mette Bredal. The two have since developed a friendship."It's an amazing feeling — the odds of something like this happening are just incredible," she said.Ms Manley now plans to visit her new friends overseas and will walk Drimsdale Beach in Holkestad, where one of the bottles was found.
