Posts go, staff reassigned as three Govt offices merge

A new Workforce Development Department is to be created from the merging of three Government offices.Although a number of posts will be eliminated in the process, Government expects no redundancies as a result.A spokeswoman for Economy, Trade and Industry confirmed that the Department of Labour and Training, the National Training Board and the Work Permits unit will be amalgamated.“The Department of Workforce Development will operate as a hub for all stakeholders in the labour market,” the spokeswoman told The Royal Gazette. “It will promote collaboration between employers and Bermudian job-seekers, monitor changes in the workforce dynamics, and proactively address labour market failures.”Workforce Development will be run from the One Stop Career Centre, expected to move into the former Magistrates’ Court building early next year.It was described as “a growing international trend to create the kind of organisation that drives economic growth by balancing the needs of the business community and the labour force”.Two Government officers will be affected, but “steps are well underway” to transfer them to other jobs, the spokeswoman added. The merger requires amendments to the Immigration and Protection Act, which will go before the House of Assembly after it reconvenes.
