Everything is ready for Throne Speech
Final preparations for the reconvening of Parliament moved into high gear at the Bermuda Regiment yesterday as troops prepared for the traditional Guard of Honour at the Cabinet Office.Governor George Fergusson will deliver his first Throne Speech at 11am today.Commanding Officer Lt Col Brian Gonsalves said: “It’s hard work for the soldiers involved and they should be commended for their dedication to duty, which comes on top of training as infantrymen and for a wide variety of other roles.“The role and pageantry the Regiment brings to major public occasions like the Convening of the Legislature cannot be overestimated and we are the only unit in Bermuda that can perform military displays such as this parade.“It adds colour and a sense of tradition to significant events. It’s appreciated by Bermuda residents and tourists alike and adds huge value to the whole Bermuda experience for our visitors.”The parade is the culmination of weeks of drill training for the Junior Non-Commissioned Officers Cadre — the Regiment’s future leaders.Regiment Adjutant Capt Ben Beasley said: “These soldiers, because of their desire to be all they can be in the Regiment, do about fifty percent more work than would otherwise be the case.“Together with Government House and the Government’s Ceremonials Committee we plan the entire event down to the last detail and our troops are determined to shine on the day, no matter what the weather is like.”After the Throne Speech, the Regiment will exercise a yearly privilege of marching through the City of Hamilton with bayonets fixed before returning to Warwick Camp.
