Arrests made following ‘disturbance’ at sports club

Several arrests have been made and a man is in hospital following a fight at St David’s Cricket Club during the Dudley Eve semi-final football match between Somerset Trojans and St George’s Colts yesterday.Police have given few details about the disturbance which reportedly happened around 3.30pm inside the clubhouse.Said a spokesman: “One male was injured and is being treated at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital as a result. The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time. Several arrests have been made in connection with this incident and inquiries are ongoing.”The brawl is just the latest in a series of ill-tempered incidents that have plagued local football in recent years.Last month’s Digicel First Division match between Hamilton Parish and Devonshire Colts at Police Field was abandoned with ten minutes remaining after female referee’s assistant Wendy Woodley was allegedly threatened and abused.Referee Stephen Allen was alleged to have been assaulted and threatened last season by then Southampton Rangers coach Keith Jennings as tempers flared after Allen awarded Dandy Town a late penalty that proved to be the game winner. The Bermuda Referees Association (BRA) threatened to boycott Southampton Oval until they were given added security whilst in the venue.Anyone with information is asked to telephone police on 295-0011.
