Political parties in Bermuda today congratulated US President Barack Obama on his conclusive victory over Mitt Romney.President Obama won 303 electoral votes to Mr Romney's 206 — 270 are needed to win.The Democratic incumbent's lead in the national popular vote count was much slimmer — he had 50.3 percent to 48.1 percent for Mr Romney.Today the PLP issued a statement which said: “In the United States, you saw an incumbent President win re-election because he stood strong for Americans.“Instead of engaging in deep and radical austerity cuts, President Barack Obama invested in the American people and created opportunities. He expanded the social safety net with a landmark healthcare reform law that ensures that all Americans have access to quality care.“Does this sound familiar? Here in Bermuda, we have one party that is standing strong for Bermudians by investing in our people and rejecting deep and radical austerity cuts. We have one party that dramatically expanded the social safety net by introducing the landmark FutureCare and DayCare programmes.“We are encouraged by President Obama’s resounding re-election and we look forward to offering a similar choice to the Bermudian people. Our Congratulations to the President. We look forward to continuing to work with him and his Administration.”Leader of the One Bermuda Alliance, Craig Cannonier, said: “On behalf of the One Bermuda Alliance, I would like to congratulate President Barack Obama on his election victory. We understand the importance of the long-standing, productive relationship Bermuda has historically enjoyed with the United States, our closest neighbour and trading partner, and we look forward to continuing our steadfast friendship under President Obama’s leadership.“It is no secret that many Bermudians hold President Obama in high regard and are delighted with his reelection. The One Bermuda Alliance applauds his efforts over the past four years to stabilise the United States economy by carefully balancing plans for debt reduction with the need for a jobs stimulus, to provide universal healthcare, to expand human rights and to stand strong for women’s rights.“The One Bermuda Alliance looks forward to working with the Obama Administration to maintain and enhance the mutually beneficial relationship between Bermuda and the United States.”
