Regiment: Draft is still alive
The Bermuda Regiment is warning the public that conscription remains in place, despite announced plans by Government to end the process.In a statement yesterday, a Regiment spokesman said that the Ministry of National Security has committed to provide a timeline next year for when conscription will end, but noted: “An end to conscription has not been established.“The Regiment is holding a final Enlistment Night at 6.30pm on November 20. All members of the public who have been selected for service or anyone who wishes to volunteer for service must report at that time.“Failure to show for military duty is an offence under the Defence Act 1965 and offenders will be disciplined accordingly.”The spokesman said the Regiment is also looking for volunteers to fill a variety of roles, and offers competitive rates of pay.Useful website: www.bermudaregiment.bm.
