Search suspended for missing yachtsman
A search and rescue operation launched last week for a 49-year-old who jumped ship some 50 miles northwest of Bermuda has been suspended.A spokesman for Bermuda’s Maritime Operations confirmed the man, believed to be American is now considered to be lost at sea.The search was suspended Friday evening after nightfall, the incident occurred onThursday.According to search and rescue specialist Brian Neilan, speaking from District Five Command Centre in Portsmouth, Virginia, the man jumped ship around 8.28pm on Thursday. He was wearing a flotation device and a personal location beacon when he left the sailing vessel. But that beacon stopped emitting signals about two hours after he went into the water.The incident was reported by a crew member on board Blue Moon who said the man jumped overboard intentionally and was reluctant to come back on-board.A US Coastguard C-130 aircraft was dispatched together with the Marine and Ports pilot boat St David in addition to the Bermuda registered ship Livorno Express and a Hong Kong registered bulk carrier Golden Lyderhorn.Two life jackets were spotted in the water around 4.30pm on Friday, no other signs were discovered since then.
