Veteran photographer honoured
Local photographer Kenneth (Ed) Kelly, whose work has appeared on postage stamps, and whose subjects have ranged from eclipses to portraits of royalty, has been presented with the AFL Prism Award in recognition of his work.Sixty years after Mr Kelly opened his first studio in St George’s, the freelance photographer was honoured for his achievements by AFL Investments along with the Bermuda Professional Photographic Association (BPPA).Mr Kelly received a cut-glass trophy for the second annual award, at a Friday night ceremony hosted by the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art.The accolade came two days after his 81st birthday.Over the decades, Mr Kelly’s camera documented events locally and internationally — including a notable scoop that was carried by TIME magazine, after he snapped notorious Argentine ex-dictator Juan Domingo Perón leaving an aeroplane before his departure from Argentina had been realised back home.Mr Kelly’s career also covered 16 solar eclipses, photographed around the world. The BPPA’s Graeme Outerbridge said the photographer’s portfolio included “hundreds of weddings, as well as public events of historic significance such as the first reading of the riot act in Bermuda”.Added Mr Outerbridge: “He has played a central role in the development of his field on the Island, and is a founding member and past President of the Bermuda Professional Photographic Association.”The award is given to cast “a spotlight on the masters” of photography in Bermuda, according to AFL Investments’ CEO Cindy Campbell. “As a Bermudian company, supporting the local arts scene is an important undertaking for us,” she said.Mr Kelly’s photography is also being showcased on the AFL Prism Award website. The retrospective can be seen via the website www.aflinvestments.bm.
