Call for blood donors
As the Island’s blood supply comes under pressure during the holiday season, the Blood Donor Centre has appealed for donations — and, in particular, new donors.Bermuda consistently lags behind other jurisdictions, with about 1,100 people or less than two percent of the population regularly giving blood. In other developed countries, roughly six percent of the population donates. The Centre is calling on donors to replenish supplies — O positive, A positive, B positive and O negative especially. The need for blood heightens in December and January due to a combination of social and shopping pressures, plus additional public holidays. The Centre, found at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, is open on Mondays and Fridays from 8.30am to 1.30pm, and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8.30am to 2.30pm. Call 236-5067 to make an appointment.Pre-testing, donation and refreshments afterward is a half-hour procedure, a Centre spokeswoman said. The one-pint donation is an amount easily replaced by the body within 24 hours.Useful website: www.bermudahospitals.bm.
