Pharmacists: Lipitor recall is not a concern

Local pharmacies are not affected by the major recall of generic Lipitor by Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals Incorporated, confirming they receive their pills from other distributors.People’s Pharmacy, Hamilton Pharmacy, and all the Phoenix Stores don’t carry the cholesterol-cutting tablets from this company. The pharmaceuticals company issued a massive recall on the pill atorvastatin because they may be contaminated with tiny glass shards. The recall covers 41 lots of the generic pill, with each lot containing thousands of pills, and includes 10 mg, 20 mg, and 40 mg dosages.According to The Wall Street Journal, Ranbaxy’s generic Lipitor makes up 44 percent of the US market for atorvastatin.Chief pharmacist at the Phoenix Centre, Alex Reimmer, said: “The recall of atorvastatin does not affect the Phoenix Stores.“The atorvastatin we keep in is supplied by Apotex in Canada and is the only supplier we’ve used since generic Lipitor became available.”An employee from the People’s Pharmacy pharmaceuticals department also confirmed that their store isn’t affected either. “We are aware of the recall, but our generic pills come from England so we aren’t affected by this situation,” she said.A pharmacist from Hamilton Pharmacy also confirmed that they aren’t affected.
