Cayman Premier arrested in corruption case
After just three and a half years in power, Cayman Island’s Premier McKeeva Bush has been arrested.Officers from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service Financial Crime Unit arrested Mr Bush at his home in West Bay early yesterday morning.Authorities in the Caribbean island say he was arrested on suspicion of theft, in connection with financial irregularities relating to the alleged misuse of a government credit card; breach of trust; abuse of office and conflict of interest.Mr Bush is also accused of being involved in the alleged unlawful importation of explosive substances. He took over the premiership in May 2009 in elections which saw his United Democratic Party gain 9 of 15 seats in the Legislative Assembly. But Mr Bush, who is also minster of finance tourism and development, has been the subject of police investigations since 2010.Earlier this year, the business rivalry between Cayman Islands and Bermuda got personal when Mr Bush wrote an open letter to Premier Paula Cox asking her to stop making disparaging remarks about his country.
