Charities continue to benefit from the goodwill brought on by Christmas.After distributing hundreds of gifts at their annual children’s Christmas party, the Coalition for the Protection of Children was able to donate gifts to the Salvation Army and other helping agencies.Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Department of Child and Family Services, Victor Scott Primary School, The Centre, Friswell’s Hill Community Centre and the West End Community Centre also benefited.Coalition founder Sheelagh Cooper said the decision to share with helping agencies comes “at a time when so many families are struggling”.“We are overwhelmed by the generosity reflected in the donation of so many presents. Indeed we know that many families who themselves are stretched financially have given gifts for others.“Bermudians are so wonderfully generous.”Coalition executive director, Nicola Feldman added: “We are so incredibly thankful to Coldwell Banker for rallying the community to raise well over 2,500 gifts for children this holiday season.”She thanked the community for “continuing to support the Coalition’s efforts in assisting families who find themselves in increasingly difficult times”.Meanwhile, HSBC Bermuda donated $10,000 to the Salvation Army in response to its appeal for help to assist families in need.This newspaper reported on Monday that the Army will spend close to $100,000 on food for needy families during the festive season.The Army’s annual Christmas appeal will this year assist 1,400 families, including close to 1,000 children the charity asked for help, particularly with gifts for children.Management and staff at HSBC decided to assist the “worthwhile charity to continue its most important work in the community”.Bank CEO Richard Moseley said: “The Salvation Army touches the lives of so many people in Bermuda.“We recognise the importance and understand the challenges charities and organisations like the Salvation Army face when it comes to funding. We hope this gift brings some relief to the Christmas programme and fundraising appeal.”Divisional Commander Major Shawn Critch said he is truly grateful for the “social consciousness and community commitment of partners like HSBC Bermuda”.“The Salvation Army is very appreciative of the generosity and confidence expressed in its mission by the corporate community. Such financial partnerships represent a critical component of our sustainable funding in support of the mission.“There will be many individuals and families who will benefit from this corporate donation by HSBC Bermuda and its board of directors.”
