Hunt: Gaming will be key to tourism recovery

Once placed under a gag order by former Premier Dr Ewart Brown, Nelson Hunt has charged there will be no major hotel development in Bermuda without gaming attached.Mr Hunt and Craig Christensen of Southlands Ltd, unveiled plans for a $1.8 billion tourist resort at Morgan’s Point in June 2011.Since then a referendum was promised by Dr Brown’s successor, former Premier Paula Cox.With the Progressive Labour Party out of the control seat, Mr Hunt is hopeful the One Bermuda Alliance Government will actually move on the issue.“When our investors heard the promise of a referendum, the money was on the table, they were ready and waiting for it to happen.“Now that the PLP Government is gone, I’m saying why even bother to have a referendum. But let’s get on with it because without casinos there will be no major development.“This new Cabinet said in the lead up to the election that they too intend to hold a referendum on gaming. Gaming is one of the conditions investors are crying for.“They have the money, we don’t, we want the investment in our economy and it comes with conditions,” said Mr Hunt.“One of the reasons I think the PLP lost the election is because they didn’t take the creation of jobs seriously. The PLP didn’t feel what the public already felt with so many people out of work.“Its all right to say you will win on the doorstep, but I think you win it by what’s on the table to eat,” he said.“With some former PLP Cabinet Ministers unemployed perhaps now they will know how it feels.“I was frustrated with the PLP Government because I know that we can create the jobs, we talked about that more than a year ago and for six years that’s all its been — talk.“I know its only been a few days since the change of Government but we’re chomping at the bit to talk to the new Cabinet as soon as possible,” said Mr Hunt.“The OBA Government would want to talk to us soon because we’re the ones with the permits, we’re the ones with the investors in place and we’re the ones who stand ready to create jobs.“If the OBA is serious we’re the ones who will produce a large portion of the 2,000 jobs they’re looking for.“People need to eat whether they’re working or not and jobs to put food on the table can’t come soon enough.“We’ve got to get going on this and by that I mean break ground, start building, that will boost the construction industry immediately,” said Mr Hunt.Despite rebranding efforts to promote Bermuda as a tourism destination he said the island is generally considered to be terribly boring by today’s visitors.“If you want to get investment here, you’ve got to give the visitors what they want. A new hotel development with casinos is the biggest development this country will ever see and we’re late.”As a PLP member who will support labour for life he said the sad reality is nothing happened to move this project under the PLP.“I have friends in the PLP who are still my friends but I have great expectations for this new Government now, and to it looks like they’re moving in the right direction.“As a labour man I would have thought a labour government would have supported me and entrepreneurs like myself who create jobs.“If I was to get disappointed about everything I would have been sick a long time ago,” said Mr Hunt.As a businessman he expressed concern for Bermuda’s social climate if no jobs are created soon.“I know there is going to be violence around here if no jobs are created soon, its written on the wall,” said Mr Hunt.“I listen to the guys outside our business establishments daily, I hear the frustration. Just go to the gas station early mornings and listen, you will hear desperation and anger.”On the flip side he said: “I was at Tucker’s Point the other day and the guy said to me they had 17 people in the house. Just imagine the costs to keep the place open for 17 guests.“We’ve got to change the mindset, our image as a tourist destination is screwed up, “ said Mr Hunt.“You have customs officers boarding cruise ships with dogs to find small amounts of weed brought in by visitors who probably worked all year just to be here only to be busted, and for what?“Why would that passenger ever return after an experience like that? Its not that much love in the world to make me want to come to Bermuda — to do what?“And if I stay in a hotel I will have to spend a lot of money on a room I’m stuck in because this country is boring as hell at night.“The economy is shrinking, countless Bermudians lost their homes and we saw no action by the PLP to lower interest rates which they had the power to do.”Said Mr Hunt: “Perhaps it was the lack of leadership that put the PLP out of Government. Make no mistake, I can take care of me and mine.“But I truly believe there is nothing that a Government cannot do with the will to do it.” After all he said: “Leadership is leadership.”
