31-year-old dies after crash, fourth fatality this year

A father-of-one was yesterday named as the year’s fourth road fatality, succumbing to injuries suffered in a crash last week.Jason Darrell, 31 was involved in a three-vehicle collision just after 5pm last Saturday at the junction of Harbour Road and Salt Kettle Road.A Police spokesman said: “Mr Darrell was in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital before ultimately succumbing to his injuries.”Mr Darrell is survived by his wife Cleophea, daughter Cindi-Anna, parents Keith and Pamela, and siblings Jermaine and Jessica.Police are appealing for information about the fatal collision. Anyone who may have seen the collision or who may have stopped to assist is asked to contact Pc David Ward at the Roads Policing Unit on 247-1504.Speaking hours after the announcement, Reverend Lorne Bean of the African Methodist Episcopal Church’s Social Action Committee called for action to stem the tide of gang activity and traffic collisionsIn a statement, he expressed concern about the “alarming disregard” of life being shown on the Island.“The AME Church appeals to the Government for a gun amnesty or a similar solution to take weapons off our streets,” Rev Bean said. “The Church will support such an initiative and will offer its facilities to the authorities to be used for that purpose.“Lives lost on Bermuda’s roads are also pointless. Statistics show that traffic fatalities outpace gun deaths. The AME Church pleads with the community to reclaim a high regard for life by using caution on the roads.”The Reverend thanked those who have already come forward with information about the murders that have plagued the Island, and called for others to do the same.So far this year four men have lost their lives in traffic collisions and two in gunfire.Andrew Peniston was killed after striking a traffic island at the junction of Barker’s Hill and North Shore Road shortly after midnight on January 6.Haile Matthews died in the early hours of January 18 after his motorcycle collided with a car on Montpelier Road in Devonshire.Musician and volunteer firefighter Torrie Baker died a day later after crashing his rental cycle on Mullet Bay Road in St George’s shortly after 2am on January 19.And on January 23, Ricco Furbert and Haile Outerbridge were gunned down inside Belvin’s Variety on Happy Valley Road. Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident.
