Brangman completed College programmes, says former employer
Education Minister Nalton Brangman successfully completed programmes at the Bermuda College, according to former employer Charles Marshall. However, Shadow Education Minister Walton Brown continues to allege Senator Brangman lied about his academic credentials by claiming he completed a programme when he actually completed a course.“Any student in a tertiary institution knows the difference between a course and a programme, the latter of course comprising a number of courses and leading to a qualification in a specific field,” Mr Brown said. The dispute began after Senator Brangman released a statement saying that he completed the Bermuda College technical programme, Electricity, Basic Theory and Application in 1983 and Electricity, Advanced Theory and Application in 1985.Mr Brown alleged that the Minister was misrepresenting facts, saying that the courses mentioned never existed at Bermuda College. However, he acknowledged that the Minister had taken “continued education courses”.In response to the allegations, the Ministry of Education released a Bermuda College document which stated that the Minister had been enrolled in two courses at the college in the period in question — Electrical Theory and Application and Advanced Electrical Theory and Application.Responding to the released document, Mr Brown said: “Minister Brangman took two courses at Bermuda College and did not take, and therefore did not complete, a programme of study as he indicated in his initial press comment on this issue.“My position is buttressed by the newly disclosed facts. I await the Premier’s response, consistent with his stated commitment to integrity and transparency in the political arena, to bring appropriate closure to Minister Brangman's cynical abuse of public trust.”However, a letter sent to The Royal Gazette by Charlie Marshall, who employed Sen Brangman during the period, stated that the Minister had successfully completed the programmes to become an electrician.“Minister Brangman came to work for my former company, PM Limited, as an apprentice electrician,” Mr Marshall said.“Part of his employment was to attend the Bermuda College’s technical programmes, as it was for all our apprentices. He attended the programmes and was successful in his assignments, qualifying as an electrician at the end of the courses.”He added: “I would suggest to Walton Brown that he assist his cousin in his task ahead because that is what families are for. Surely he wants to see Minister Brangman be successful in this extremely important Ministry.“The people have spoken, and now we all need to work together for a better Bermuda.”
