Magistrate hits Pembroke man with $3,600 in fines for a series of traffic offencesBy Ceola WilsonA 36-year-old Pembroke man was fined $3,600 yesterday and disqualified from driving all vehicles for the next four years.Devonne Calvin Simmons, 36, appeared in Magistrates’ Court on Monday where he denied driving while impaired refusing to give a breath sample and escaping lawful custody in Devonshire on March 8.He was remanded into custody by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner, because he had failed to appear for another set of offences allegedly committed in 2010.Simmons yesterday changed his plea to guilty on all three charges committed this month. He was fined $800 for impaired driving and disqualified from driving all vehicles for one year.Crown counsel Garrett Byrne offered no evidence on the second charge of refusing to take the test. Simmons was fined another $500 for escaping lawful custody.He then admitted driving while impaired on April 2, 2010 for which he was fined another $1,000.Mr Warner tagged on another driving disqualification of one year for the second impaired driving charge, and ordered it to be served once the first disqualification ends.Simmons admitted that he committed the offences while he was disqualified from driving all vehicles.He was fined $500 as a result, and Mr Warner further banned him from the road for another 24 months a ban of four years in total.Mr Warner ordered that the fines be paid in full by April 13.
