Island hosting experts on fighting transnational crime
Bermuda will this week host an international workshop aimed at investigating and prosecuting transnational crime.The 2013 Commonwealth Caribbean Regional Workshop is set to begin this morning at the Fairmont Hamilton.The workshop will be attended by a host of local and international figures representing Barbados, the Turks and Caicos, the United States, Barbados and the British Virgin Islands.Along with an opening addresses by Governor George Fergusson, Attorney General Mark Pettingill and Chief Justice Ian Kawaley, Judge Michael Hopmeier from Kingston Crown Court will speak on combating financial crime and the challenges of small Island jurisdictions.Presenters will include relevant experts from the UK, Caribbean, Bermuda, Canada and the USA.The conference will deal with the following matters through presentations, case studies and panel discussions, with topics including gang crime, corruption and money laundering.There will be a full programme of events provided to encourage networking, including a conference dinner hosted by the Director of Public Prosecutions Rory Field and supported by the Commonwealth Secretariat and a reception hosted by the Governor of Bermuda on the final night.This workshop is substantially sponsored by the Commonwealth Secretariat as part of an ongoing series of events to support prosecutors, build the Caribbean Association of Prosecutors and support other officers in the criminal justice system.
