Bermuda Highland Games return on June 15
Pipe bands, tug o’ war and the tossing of the caber — they’re all signs that the second annual Bermuda Highland Games is coming to town. The Caledonian Society of Bermuda is gearing up for an even bigger celebration of “all things Scottish” at Saltus Playing Field, in Pembroke, on June 15.Food and drink with a “distinctly Scottish influence” will be on offer; as well as a host of athletic events, including a ‘kilted dash’, 5K obstacle course and a Highland dancing competition. This year’s event will be put on in conjunction with the Bermuda Island Pipe Band and Highland Dancers, with support and appearances by the Bermuda Regiment, North Village Band and the Somerset Brigade Band.Picking up speed from last year’s well attended event, overseas visitors from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Pipe Band Halifax Division and their dancers will be flying in to take part. Also due attend are the Schiehallion Dancers from Hamilton, Ontario and the Mackenzie School of Dance from Halifax, Nova Scotia.President Scott Devine, of the Caledonian Society of Bermuda, said: “The society has worked long and hard to promote all things Scottish in Bermuda and the Highland Games is the ultimate Scottish event.“We look forward to welcoming the entire Island to Saltus Field to sample traditional Scottish food and games, like tossing the caber, tug o’war, musical displays and highland dancing competitions.“The whole event will run alongside the visit to the Island of the RCMP Halifax Division who will also be accompanying the Bermuda Regiment in the Queen’s Birthday Parade which will be held earlier that day.“The day is shaping up to be a great spectacle and lot of fun for the entire family. We hope people will come out and enjoy a great day of fun, games and all things Scottish.”Major sponsors at this year’s event include: Bermuda Department of Tourism, Hiscox Bermuda, Belco, Jardine Matheson, Goslings and The Royal Gazette.Admission is $5 for adults and free for children under 12 years old.
