Redgrave returns for Hackers defence
Sir Steve Redgrave is returning to Bermuda next month to defend his Hackers Cup title, and is bringing a host of big-name celebrities with him.The Olympian will captain a celebrity team that includes Sky Sports presenter Sarah Stirk, TV’s Johnny Vaughan, and veteran actors James Bolam MBE, and Warren Clarke.A group of well-respected British journalists, led by veteran golf writer Peter Corrigan, will once again provide the opposition for an event that is being sponsored by British Airways, Fairmont Southampton and The Bermuda Department of Tourism.The Hackers Cup, the brainchild of late Peter Tory, Fleet Street Columnist, his brother Mike Winfield, then Port Royal Golf Club’s Andrew Brooks and Elizabeth Ward, pits a team of celebrities against a team of journalists over two days of golf at Tucker’s Point and Port Royal.The celebrities and journalists will also play in an AMAM event at Turtle Hill Golf Club, as part of their visit.Designed as a means of selling Bermuda to golfers world wide, Mike Winfield is excited about the possibilities, and publicity, that will be generated by having the likes of Sir Steve come to the Island.“We are hopeful that this year we will generate even more favourable publicity for Bermuda,” said Mr Winfield. “Golf players represent our market and by getting them all to play on three of Bermuda’s golf courses, we are convinced that, not only will we have an interesting and enjoyable five days, but that we believe will generate the positive word of mouth and copy we need in this important market.”A golf tournament on the surface, the Cup has already generated plenty of positive publicity for Bermuda, and following the inaugural event in 2011, the event was featured on Sky Sports News, Al Jazeera Sports, the BBC, a host of blogs and Twitter feeds, and in The Independent newspaper.Next month’s event will take place from April 7 to April 12, and will feature an AMAM event, two days of the Hackers Cup, and see Sir Steve visit the Bermuda Diabetes Association and the Bermuda Rowing Association to encourage them in their work.“We are very fortunate to be able to welcome back to Bermuda, Sir Steve Redgrave, the captain of the winning Celebrity team from 2011,” said the organisers. “Sir Steve will also be visiting with the Bermuda Diabetes Association and the Bermuda Rowing Association.“Steve gave of his time and valuable expertise last time, and is truly committed to Bermuda.“British Airways were so impressed with the success of our last event that they will again fly all of our guests to Bermuda, Club World, and will be represented in the event by two senior executives, Richard Tams, Head of UK & Ireland Sales and Marketing, British Airways and Iberia and Keith Chuter, Sales Manager, Specialised Markets and Marianne Wilcox, head of BA in Bermuda.“Fairmont Southampton are joining forces with us to provide accommodation in Fairmont Gold, and The Bermuda Department of Tourism will further support the event. HSBC are planning a special event at their Harbourview Building for our visitors.“We are also grateful to Goslings, Dunkley’s Dairy and of course the three courses Turtle Hill, Tuckers Point, and Port Royal for their support. Both Sir Steve and Mr Corrigan will be in Bermuda for next month’s Hackers Cup, and as part of the event will be participating in an AMAM at Fairmont Southampton’s Turtle Hill Golf Club on Monday, April 8.
Sir Steve will captain the celebrity team, which includes actors James Bolam MBE (‘The Likely Lads’, ‘New Tricks’), Warren Clarke (‘A Clockwork Orange’, ‘Dalziel’ and ‘Pascoe’), and broadcaster Johnny Vaughan (‘The Big Breakfast’, ‘Capital Radio’).
The media team, once again led by Mr Corrigan, includes Philippa Kennedy OBE, and Simon Kelner, the former editor-in-chief of The Independent and Independent on Sunday newspapers.
The AMAM, which starts at 2pm, is open to all Bermuda residents. Places are $200 a person, and entrants will be placed in teams with a celebrity or journalist as captain.
