Boy redirects his $100 graduation gift to help others
A 10-year-old West Pembroke Primary School student was moved to donate $100 of his graduation gifts to help young people through the Coalition for the Protection of Children.Proud parents Derek and Robin Simmons told The Royal Gazette their son Aaron, 10, chipped in for the ‘Neighbours Helping Neighbours’ campaign. With the help of Belco, the scheme supports an emergency fund to help clients of Age Concern, Family Centre and the Coalition with electricity bills and other urgent requirements.“My husband and I live life based on the principles of the Bible,” Ms Simmons said. “This is actually how we’re teaching Aaron to live his life.”A Belco employee, Ms Simmons told her son about the campaign. Aaron, the youngest of three brothers, chose to support the Coalition.“This was no strain on Aaron — he’s done things like this before,” Ms Simmons added.“People are still going to give him more money. And he’ll probably pick another charity to give it to.”The Pembroke family attends Shekinah Worship Centre.“The Bible says to love thy neighbour — and this charity is about neighbours helping neighbours,” Ms Simmons said.Donate by picking up an envelope at Belco, or by going to the agencies’ respective websites at www.ageconcern.bm, www.tfc.bm, and www.coalition.bm.
