Shops opening on a Sunday what do you think?
Should more of Bermuda’s shops open on Sundays? The Royal Gazette took to the streets of Hamilton to find what members of the public thought about the idea and found a general receptiveness to the idea, with some variations in what people would like to see.Chris Bennett, 29, of Pembroke, wants stores to be open on Sundays. He said: “Everybody works 9am - 5pm jobs, so it would be more convenient if they stayed open from 11am to 7pm, especially liquor stores and hardware stores.”Pedro Braga, 35, of Paget, said: “Yes, stores should be open on Sunday because there’s nowhere to go.” He went on to explain his view on the sale of alcohol on Sundays. “Of course liquor should be sold on Sunday, every bar should be open and I don’t understand why they aren’t open longer. I work 9am to 5pm, it would be better if they opened longer.”Stephen Rossiter, of Devonshire, said: “Why not? It’s like that everywhere else in the world. Liquor is a whole different subject because employers didn’t like their employees turning up on Monday morning hungover, so they banned booze on the Sunday.“Just like they used to close the bars at 11pm, it’s so you could get some sleep and make work the next day. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. The world has changed, we have to modernise like everywhere I guess. I go to the grocery store on a Sunday now if I need it, or a hardware store to buy plants and stuff, but I don’t need to go down to buy a pair of shoes on a Sunday because I do that on a Saturday or during the week.”June Butterfield, 53, of Warwick, said: “I’d prefer if stores were open 8am to 1pm as opposed to 1pm to 5pm. But I can respect those stores that do open at later times.”Visitors to Bermuda, John Epprecht, of Connecticut, and Julie Dobslaw, of St Louis, Missouri, shared their views.“Maybe stores should stay open until 6pm,” said Mrs Dobslaw. While Mr Epprecht said: “They just changed this law in my state.”Lou Adanio, of Southampton, thinks there can be limited shopping hours on Sunday. He said: “I’d say 12pm to 5pm. I’d like to see all the department stores, hardware stores, especially for the tourists.”Local artist Chai T., of Somerset, explained why she thinks stores should stay completely closed on Sundays. “I would say no, and I’ll tell you why, because I’m old school,” she said. “I think we bastardised the experience of staying open 24/7. I think we are using up everyone's energy, so I think if we go back to a certain amount of hours a week, whatever store hours are.”She’d like to see jobs allow their employees to have Sundays off for the sake of not being over worked, and to allow them some family time.“I don’t think we necessarily need to be open, and I think it’s important for people to be balanced. So if you’re open on Sunday, they won’t get the break they deserve. We need to get back to our family and like in the old days, before people’s time were being stretched so much.”Richard Witkowski, of Smith’s, said: “I think they should be open regular time, 9am to 5pm. I’d like to see as many stores open as they want to be open. I’d like to see the supermarket open extended hours. Probably hardware stores more so than grocery stores.”Chris Estwanik, of Pembroke, believes a minor change in store hours could make a positive difference in his life.“Maybe open later by a couple hours, like for somebody like me with children. It would be nice to be able to shop for things for house projects, retail shopping for clothes. It’s more to pick up the odds and ends for household projects, mostly at hardware stores.”
