Lil Quan completes third TV triumph

Jeremiah (Lil Quan) Steede: Third victory on BET

Local rapper Lil Quan's relentless march towards musical stardom took another step forward last night after he won yet another round in a US TV talent show. The 16-year-old — otherwise known as Jeremiah Steede — had returned to New York for the third time to put his skills to the test on BET's '106 and Park', competing in the hip hop and R&B category of the programme. And after yet another nail-biting live broadcast followed by a phone-in vote by viewers, the Bermudian emerged victorious not only in last night's tie, but also as outright winner of the hip hop section. The win means that Jeremiah is now one of five category winners in with a chance of being voted the contest's MVP — Most Valuable Performer — and picking up the ultimate prize of performing with US rap star 'Diggy' Simmons.Receiving 66 percent of the audience vote last night, Jeremiah said he had been confident of victory from the start.“It went perfectly — everything was right on point,” the CedarBridge Academy student said in a telephone interview as he was swamped by fans outside the BET studio.Manager Jonathan Talbot added that the performance had been a strong one and that Jeremiah had managed to get the crowd involved from the start.“They looked very good on stage, and although they didn't practise as much as last time, the performance was better than last time,” Mr Talbot said.Mr Talbot now believes Jeremiah has the potential to forge a career in the competitive music business, and that last night's win could eventually earn the rapper a recording contract.“Jeremiah's very articulate and has a very marketable look, but he's also very humble and respectful and just loves what he does — he loves to perform on stage,” he said.Despite his win, Jeremiah will not be performing on the programme again. Instead, the network will be airing repeat broadcasts of all five category winners' previous performances during the MVP phone-in vote, which opens tomorrow. Lines will close next Tuesday before the outright winner is announced.BET is broadcast on cable channel 34 in Bermuda. Votes can be cast from any smartphone by downloading the free 106 and Park APP.
