Hall of Fame runner Ed Sherlock has achieved many milestones during his life. But his latest tops the list.Today mark’s the multiple Bermuda Day Half Marathon champion’s 50th wedding anniversary to loving wife, Bernice. The couple, who reside in Scenic Heights, Southampton, exchanged wedding vows at Vernon Temple on August 28, 1963.They met working as employees at Bermuda Trading Company on Reid Street and courted each other for 16 years before eventually tying the knot.“We got mixed up and had a date and things took off from there,” Mr Sherlock recalled. “It wasn’t love at first sight, but the love grew and grew.”As with any marriage, the Sherlocks have endured their share of ups and downs and come through unscathed.“It’s been a long road and it wasn’t easy,” Mr Sherlock admitted. “It wasn’t easy but with the help of the Lord we made it through.”Mr Sherlock, 81, attributes humility as one of the key ingredients of his prosperous union.“It takes two to make an argument so if you are wrong you must admit you’re wrong and don’t go to bed with anger in your heart,” he said. “We just kiss and make up.”During his heyday Mr Sherlock won the Bermuda Day Half Marathon six times, including five on the trot, between 1956 and 1962.He lost his title in 1963, the same year he married his second wife who has been one of his biggest supporters over the years.“She is the backbone of my running and the way I am now,” Mr Sherlock said. “When I was courting my present wife in those days I had to make sacrifices. Sometimes my coach told me to leave the ladies alone, but it didn’t humbug me and she understood.”Asked where does his latest milestone rank, Mr Sherlock emphatically replied: “Number one! This is number one because 50 years is golden.”Mrs Sherlock, who celebrates her 87th birthday tomorrow, said she never dreamed that one day she would marry one of the Island’s greatest runners.“In the early years I heard of this Ed Sherlock winning the race (May 24th) and all that but never thought I’d get connected with him, but here we are,” she smiled. “He’s a nice guy so I said I would try it out.“We had our ups and downs when we first met but I kept on going. It was a very good time and he was all right then and still is.“I really didn’t think we would make it this far, but we worked along together and made it. It wasn’t easy but whatever we went through with our marriage we never had any bad reactions from it.“Whenever Ed was uptight with me I would sing. I would sing in my heart and pray for the Lord to help us both through this situation and we never went to bed fussing with one another.”
