Village goals worth $400 for charity

Top scorer Jason Lee and Jaquan Smith-DeShields set the ball rolling for the first football match in the fifth annual Kicks for Cancer campaign.The launch on Sunday resulted in $400 worth of goals in a North Village victory over Flanagan’s Onions at Bernard Park.The Freisenbruch Meyer Group has pledged to donate $100 to Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre during the month of October for every goal scored by North Village.Newly elected club president Stephen Coddington said the month-long campaign to raise public awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month got off to a great start.“We have an amazing team of volunteers who work very diligently to ensure that the campaign is a success every year and it just keeps getting bigger and better,” he said.North Village Premier team players donned pink jerseys in their first winning match that saw three goals by Mr Lee.They were greeted by many fans wearing the official pink Kicks for Cancer T-shirts at the game.“We just about sold out of the T-shirts on Sunday so we’re going to be ordering more,” said Mr Coddington.“North Village fans are very loyal and they are proud to support not only our premier team but also this very worthy cause.“It was great to look around and see so much pink. We can always count on our fans,” he added.The proceeds raised from T-shirt sales will also be donated to BHC at the end of the campaign which continues when Village take on Southampton Rangers at Southampton Oval on Sunday.
