Grandparents celebrated

A group has been founded to provide support to the Island’s grandparents.‘Grandparents Bermuda’ said their aim is to generate awareness of the issues currently facing Bermuda’s grandparents, as well as providing resources, statistics, support to all Bermuda’s grandparents.The initiative begins in earnest today as Premier Craig Cannonier declares this Sunday, October 20, Bermuda’s first ‘National Grandparents Day’.Several local restaurants and merchants have signed up to the initiative and will be offering special events and offers in collaboration.Landfall Restaurant, the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, and Grotto Bay have all agreed to host a Grandparents Day Brunch this Sunday, with the Princess offering to foot the bill for all grandparents that are accompanied by at least one adult each.Meanwhile, the group is asking residents to participate and celebrate their grandparents either through social media, by giving a gift, or simply by taking the time to do something special.The initiative is endorsed by Generations USA and GRAND Magazine, according to Grandparents Day coordinator, Valerie Pethen, who added that Generations USA have also permitted access to their material.“Grandparents Bermuda began as a group of nine grandparents and friends who were invited for a presentation on Grandparents Raising Grandchildren,” said Mrs Pethen. “Many others have expressed interest and will become part of our initiative as our objectives unfold.”
