Wheddon’s killer walks free

A soldier who admitted causing the death of Bermudian Major Christian Wheddon has been sentenced to community service by a UK court.During an appearance in UK’s Oxford Crown Court, 38-year-old Netani Kepa pleaded guilty to the offence of causing death by dangerous driving.According to reports, 43-year-old Maj Wheddon was Kepa’s passenger in a Mitsubishi Warrior on September 9 last year, when the vehicle veered off the A34 near the village of Drayton, Oxfordshire and crashed.Kepa was seriously injured in the collision, but Maj Wheddon was killed.Kepa was subsequently charged with causing the officer’s death by dangerous driving.The matter has been scheduled to go to trial this week — but Kepa pleaded guilty before the trail could begin.According to the Oxford Mail, Kepa, a solider based in the Lucknow Barracks in Hampshire, admitted careless driving but initially denied dangerous driving.The court yesterday sentenced Kepa to a 12-month community order and 300 hours of unpaid work. He was also disqualified from driving for a period of one year and ordered to pay the prosecution’s costs of £500.Maj Wheddon joined the Bermuda Regiment in 1987. In 1990, he moved to the UK for studies and became a member of the Glasgow and Salford University Officers Training Corps.He joined the Bermuda Police Service in 1997, and remained with the service until 2004 when he left with the rank of sergeant.Maj Wheddon served as the Adjutant for the Bermuda Regiment between 2004 and 2008, and then served as the aide-de-camp (ADC) for the Governor between 2008 and 2011.Prior to his death, he was being groomed to lead the Regiment. He had been detached to the British Army for a Commanding Training Package, during which he served as part of the OPERATION Olympics security team.Outside of the Regiment, Maj Wheddon was described as a loving father, a keen sailor and a passionate traveller.He was survived by his parents David and Margaret, siblings Mark, Julian and Kim, and his daughter Katherine.
