Berkeley Institute students marched in a show of respect for former school principal, educator and social justice campaigner Clifford Maxwell.

The funeral at St Theresa’s Cathedral in Hamilton yesterday was packed with Berkeleyites of all ages, including a retinue of student pallbearers that carried Dr Maxwell’s casket from the service.

Dr Maxwell’s passing has been marked at the school where the flag has been at half-mast following his death on November 1.

The loss has been felt across the community as well, where many received instruction from Dr Maxwell. His career began at the Bermuda Technical Institute.

Along with his widow Florenz, Dr Maxwell joined others in the Progressive Group in bringing about the desegregation of the Island’s public places.

He was 80 years old when he died.
