Powerless sports centre offers limited activities

Sandys 360 Acommunity sports centre

Doors remain shut at the Sandys 360 community sports centre — which is without power due to unpaid electricity bills.

Despite the setback, the Somerset facility has kept “as many programmes running as we can”, according to a member of staff, who said a nearby building was being used.

Acting chairman Stanley Lee said there would be no word on a formal reopening of the facility until the board issued a statement.

“We are still offering our after school programme and our exercise programme,” Mr Lee said. “We have gym on Saturday mornings, and basketball on Saturday afternoons is still running.”

According to an apology to its supporters recently issued by management, Sandys 360 didn’t contact members over the disconnection by Belco “as we anticipated this matter would have been resolved”.

Although the job status of employees hasn’t been confirmed by directors, sources close to the facility say its closure is mandatory while the electricity remains off.

Belco, which does not comment on account details for its customers, has characterised the cut-off at the start of this month as “a last resort”.

The $10.1 million facility has persistently struggled to contain its operating expenses, according to candid interviews with managing director Melvyn Bassett earlier this year.
