Typhoon donations top $100,000

Aftermath: Typhoon Haiyan survivors ride motorbikes through the ruins of the destroyed town of Guiuan, Philippines. The Bermuda Red Cross has collected donations of more than $100,000 after launching an appeal to help victims and their families.

More than $100,000 of pledges and donations to help the Philippines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan have been received by the Bermuda Red Cross.

The massive storm struck the Southeast Asia island nation on Friday, with sustained winds of 195 miles per hour and gusts reaching 235mph.

More than 2,300 people have been confirmed dead. That number is expected to rise even further in the days and weeks ahead.

Bermuda Red Cross director Ann Spencer-Arscott said the charity had amassed $105,600 in pledges and donations for typhoon relief as of yesterday afternoon.

“Many schools and offices have told us that they are doing grub days and will be collecting food,” she said. “There will also be donation areas down at the Rugby Classic through to Saturday. People are really giving and doing their part.

“I’m not surprised by the donations because I know how generous the Bermuda community is and how willing they are to help those who have suffered a disaster like this one.”

Telecommunication firm TBI has pledged $1,000 to the Bermuda Red Cross to assist victims and placed Red Cross donation buckets at its Customer Care Centre on Victoria Street.

And Logic Communications announced it would be offering free long distance calls to the Philippines from its Victoria Street store. A spokeswoman said: “Our hearts go out to the Philippines and the members of our community in Bermuda whose friends and family were affected by this tragic event.

“We understand that loved ones are still trying to connect with family members overseas. We would like to invite all members of the community in Bermuda to come to the retail store at 30 Victoria street, where there will be phones set up to make free long distance calls to the Philippines between the hours of 8.30am and 4.00pm until November 22.”

Logic will also have computer terminals set up to use the internet to connect with friends and family overseas, but will be closed this Saturday and Sunday.

The Association of Filipinos in Bermuda have also been collecting cash donations from the public, with funds going to Catholic Relief Services, Operation Blessing and the Philippine National Red Cross.

Earlier this week, the Bermuda Government pledged $50,000 to the Bermuda Red Cross to support relief efforts in the Philippines.

And the UK’s Disasters Emergency Committee will match the Bermuda Red Cross Donations up to a total of £5 million.
