Club wants to create homework centre for student athletes

North Village Community Club is hoping to erect temporary classroom facilities at Bernard Park to help its young members.

According to an application received by the Planning Department earlier this month, the club hopes to erect two portable, prefabricated classrooms from Dellwood Middle School at their grounds at Bernard Park.

In a letter included in the planning application, club president Stephen Coddington wrote that the primary purpose of the facilities would be to provide an after-school teaching area for student athletes.

“We have implemented a review process whereby students must provide monthly reports (completed by their teachers) on both their academic standards and their behaviour,” said Mr Coddington.

“While the reports successfully highlighted some of the challenges of our children have, currently we are not equipped to provide the assistance we desperately want to give them without the presence of a building. Some of the assistance included tutoring, board work and small group off-the-field interaction.

“In addition, many of our children currently leave school at the end of the day and have few ‘positive’ places to go to.

“Our educational centre will offer our youth players (of which there are in excess of 110) a safe, supervised facility in which to continue their scholarly studies prior to participating in their sporting activities.”

Mr Coddington said that a number of North Village’s board members and coaching staff are educators who are committed to helping the young people progress academically and reach their full potential.

He also noted the facility, if approved, could be used for community youth groups, informational and supportive parent seminars and a meeting area for the board and club members.
