Parish council fills hampers for needy families

Christmas is coming a little early for 20 needy East End families, thanks to the St George’s Parish Council.

Members of the 12-strong group anonymously submitted the names of people in their respective areas who have been struggling to make ends meet.

“We’ve put together a nice, hefty hamper for them,” council member Thomas Harvey said, listing off victuals ranging from seven-pound chicken roasters to 25lb bags of rice.

Council members gathered last night in the Richard Allen AME Church to fill their gift baskets, which will be delivered today.

The initiative is being funded out of more than $3,000 raised by trash collections last month.

The group is also teaming with the police’s Community Action Team for the East End, to dish out takeaway lunches this Sunday for residents of the area’s Gulf Stream housing facility.
