Hairdresser admits cannabis importation
A 24-year-old British hairdresser has admitted importing more than a pound of cannabis resin into Bermuda.
Guest worker Lauren Davis changed her plea at Magistrates’ Court today after initially denying that she imported $60,000 worth of the drug.
She also denied possessing cannabis with intent to supply and no evidence was offered by the prosecution on that count today.
The court previously heard that Ms Davis, who lives with a friend on Devon Springs Road in Devonshire, lost her job at Strands because of the charges.
Today, prosecutor Takiyah Burgess said Davis landed in Bermuda on the British Airways flight from Gatwick on November 8.
Ms Burgess said she passed immigration, picked up a single black duffle bag from baggage claim and declared nothing, exiting the terminal and getting into a private car.
Police arrested her on Cahow Way, stopping the car as it headed toward St George’s.
Ms Burgess said Davis was taken to a police station where she was asked if the bag was hers by a drug officer and she said yes.
The prosecutor said the officer asked where the drugs were and she showed him 608.81g of cannabis resin, with a street value of $60,850, inside the lining of a black Staples binder.
Davis, who faces a possible two months to two years imprisonment for the offences, will be sentenced next week. She was remanded in custody in the meantime.
