Staff from the Mid-Ocean Club have joined in the restoration of the long-neglected St George’s golf course — with area MPs now hoping to get the defunct course open again for play.

A team from Mid-Ocean helped four Government-hired workers with mowing at the course, and also spruced up the second hole.

“We were asked whether Mid-Ocean might be prepared to contribute manpower and machinery to assist in the refurbishment, and we indicated that we were always open to support such ventures,” club president Alan Dunch said.

The course has lain fallow for many years, and volunteers are needed to cut grass and clear vegetation.

While the Mid-Ocean team couldn’t join in this Saturday’s public overhaul of the course, they were free yesterday to do some work at the East End, under the watchful eye of supervisor Norman Furtado.

St George’s MPs Kenneth Bascome and Nandi Davis have been pushing for their fellow in Government to support the restoration efforts, according to Mr Bascome.

“It’s our hope that after this we can convince our colleagues into putting all nine holes back into play,” the St George’s North MP added. “That’s what our aspirations are for the community of St George’s.”

Mr Bascome said that if the campaign proved successful, the second hole would become the first hole on the new golf course.

“That is why we are looking for a really good turnout this Saturday,” he said. “With that in mind, we are appealing to the general public to come out and help us.”

Tomorrow’s cleanup is open to all, and runs from 9am to 2pm. Volunteers should meet in the area of the old Oxford Laundry, which can be reached from Khyber Pass up Rose Hill.

Mr Bascome thanked the Corporation of St George’s for providing tables, chairs and a tent for the cleanup and said the St George’s Club had offered its rest room facilities for the day.

Several businesses have donated a variety of food and drink for volunteers.
