Looking for a place to eat, shop or visit? Amy has it all mapped out

Amy Peniston has created Bermuda Mapp, an internet site that gives locals and guests information and locations of places of interest, restaurants and businesses.

Exploring everything Bermuda has to offer is now just a click away.

With the ‘Bermuda Mapp’ created by 22-year-old Bermudian Amy Peniston, locals and tourists can now access a map of Bermuda — online or off — that presents the user with locations and information for every restaurant, business or attraction on the Island.

From shopping in Hamilton to dining in Dockyard, Ms Peniston says she has exhaustively created a digital product that could very well give the competition a serious run for its money.

“Say you’re a tourist, and all you know is that you’re staying at, say, the Hamilton Princess. You can bring up the Hamilton Princess and view all the information and where you are in Bermuda. So now you know where you are, you want to go get some food. Let’s say you want to go to a food truck. With one click you can see all your options. Maybe after that you want to get some coffee, or go shopping. I’ve marked all the stores in Hamilton, exactly where they are,” she said.

After two months of coding, a lot of self-teaching and plenty of wandering around the Island “looking lost”, Ms Peniston, a graduate of Duke University with a degree in biomedical engineering, is finally ready to share her creation with Bermuda. But the next step, she said, is up to business owners.

“The ultimate goal is to have them buy their own marker. Any day, any time, they can go in and change the information, because some things change quickly. A food truck’s menu might change, or a restaurant does weekly specials that change, and want to keep people everyone updated. Right now they only use Facebook, but a lot of older people don’t know to check there. Older tourists wouldn’t know to go on Facebook to check Tribe Road Kitchen’s menu,” she said.

“If you’re a tourist, how else would you find out everything? Not just the few businesses or places that can afford the advertising to be on the front page of the higher traffic websites. Maybe there’s a small place that doesn’t have a huge advertising budget, like Dorothy’s. Tourists would flip out for a Dorothy’s burger! Although I don’t know if locals would be very happy with that.”

Ms Peniston graduated in 2012 and is hoping to capitalise on the need for local innovative and digital products.

“It’s sad because local businesses are outsourcing so much. For the size of Bermuda, there’s a fair amount of web design companies, but are they pushing the envelope? Probably not as much as I would want if I was working there. Web design is an important skill in today’s job market. Americans are outsourcing to India and China and it’s a shame,” she said.

“I’ve talked to a lot of clients I’ve taken over for because they’re having such bad relationships with their web designers. Web designers have a stigma. Because they’re getting a such bad rap everyone’s hiring the cheapest one instead of the one that maybe has more experience.”

Beyond giving graduates a leg up on competition (starting salaries for smartphone app developers are now among the highest for all graduates), learning how to write code, said Amy, teaches a person invaluable skills that translate into any work environment.

“Duke taught me how to find the answer to any question that I had. So I’ve taught myself how to code, and frequently found myself not knowing what to do next, and ... the internet is a great thing. You can learn anything, you can teach yourself anything.

“Learning how to write code is pretty important these days. It teaches you how to think logically and find mistakes. It’s like an extreme game of logic. It also teaches you accuracy. Misspell one word or leave out a colon and your whole thing won’t work. I could crash the Bermuda Mapp just by removing one comma.

“You can’t learn from a book. You have to teach yourself. I just really, really wanted to do this, so I figured it out.”
