Boreholes may be drilled to prevent future flooding

Boreholes could be used as part of a solution to flooding that cuased a section of wall and sidewalk to collapse on Palmetto Road during heavy rains last month.

A series of boreholes could prevent major flooding on Palmetto Road, Minister of Public Works Patricia Gordon-Pamplin said at the weekend.

Ms Gordon-Pamplin added that staff from Public Works were looking at creating another exit and entrance off nearby Perimeter Lane after heavy rain caused an embankment on the Devonshire stretch of Palmetto Rd to collapse, bringing down power poles and causing flooding and structural damage to nearby homes.

Ms Gordon-Pamplin said: “The Ministry hopes to have a solution soon regarding the creation of an alternative point of access.

“Works crews are looking to clear one ditch in particular in this area, once the water has abated, in order to improve the efficiency of drainage in this area.”

And she added: “In the very near future, the Ministry is looking at creating boreholes on Palmetto Road to prevent this severity of flooding from occurring.

“The area is a low-lying area — on the same level as the marsh — which is one of the factors contributing to the flooding problem in this neighbourhood.”

Government workers have already used sandbags around one home on Perimeter Lane to help prevent further flooding.
