New roundabouts and junction alterations planned for year ahead

Upcoming developments to the Island’s roads have been revealed by Public Works Minister Patricia Gordon-Pamplin in her Budget brief, delivered at the House of Assembly.

Road improvements have been allocated $4.75 million for the coming fiscal year, the Minister said, with projects including:

• A roundabout at the junction of Middle Road and North Shore Road in Flatts;

• A realignment of St David’s Road between the No 1 and No 2 gates to the old base road;

• Widening of Middle Road, Warwick, east of Burnt House Hill;

• Traffic lights at the junction of Middle Road and Rockaway, Southampton;

• A roundabout at the junction of Blackwatch Pass and North Shore Road in Pembroke.

Recent refurbishments include fresh sidewalks along North Shore Road, Pembroke, by Grassy Bay — as well as North Shore Road, Smith’s by Gibbet Island.

Although resurfacing has been held up by “a lack of aggregate and issues with the asphalt plant”, Ms Gordon-Pamplin said 9km would be done by the close of the present fiscal year, with 10km to get resurfaced in the year to come.

Some $300,000 has been set aside for a widening of Middle Road in Warwick, between Burnt House Hill and the Spicelands riding school.

Street lighting, which was contracted to Belco during this fiscal year, is expected to get cheaper with the spread of LED lighting, currently being tested on Trimingham Hill between the Crow lane and South Road.

“As more energy saving lights are incorporated, it should help to reduce this budget in the long term,” Ms Gordon-Pamplin said — adding that there currently an average of 56 street lights out of action per month.
