Bermuda’s Red Cross appeal for typhoon relief reaches $365,000

Bermuda’s Red Cross appeal for victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines has raised $365,000.

A spokeswoman for the organisation said the special account was set up after the devastating storm hit the Pacific island chain in November last year, killing thousands and wrecking entire communities.

She added that $305,000 was sent last December to the British Red Cross for relief work and that another $60,000 would be sent after the accounts are closed at the end of the month.

The spokeswoman said: “As we near the six-month milestone, British Red Cross has announced that there are plans over the next two and a half years to rebuild homes, boost people’s health and incomes and repair schools in the province of Ilo Ilo.

“Through the British Red Cross more than $17 million has been raised for the relief effort.”

She added if anyone has additional contributions to the Bermuda fund-raising drive, they can donate until April 30 at Bank of Butterfield account number 20 006 060 663859.

“The Bermuda Red Cross would like to thank the community for the tremendous support they showed to support those less fortunate through their fundraising efforts.”
