North Village to host football fundraiser to cancer patient
The cash-strapped family of cancer survivor Kamala Smith have been embraced by the North Village Community Club, with a fundraising football match to be held tomorrow.
Ms Smith, a mother of two, is battling the rare and debilitating cancer leiomyosarcoma, which requires intensive medical treatment and trips to the US.
Her family are struggling to cover her medical costs.
The friendly game, which pits the North Village Masters team against the Coronas, kicks off at 3pm at the club’s home field in Bernard Park.
Players will pay $20 each in a battle for “bragging rights”, explained North Village president Stephen Coddington.
“Kamala is part of the North Village family,” Mr Coddington said.
“Her husband Nakia played for our Premier team, our Corona team and now plays for our Masters team.
“Her son Kenori plays for our Under-10 age group and her son Nakai plays for our Under 8 age group.
“Our hearts go out to the whole family and we sincerely hope that this fundraiser will help relieve some of the financial burden they now face due to Kamala’s illness.”
Donations will also be collected.
“This promises to be a fun event and we encourage everyone to dig deep into their pockets and come out to support this very worthy cause,” Mr Coddington added.
North Village Community Club is a registered charity.
