Founding member of the PLP dies

The Opposition Progressive Labour Party is in mourning following the death of one of its longest serving members.

Brennell Henry joined the party when it was founded in 1963 and is believed to have been the last surviving member of the member of the PLP's original Central Committee. She also served as Membership Secretary.

In a statement released last night, a party spokesman said: “The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party extends condolences to the family of the late Brennell Henry.

“A member of Devonshire Branch, Mrs Henry, and the late Mrs Leonie Richards, sister to the late Dame Lois Browne-Evans, were instrumental in the Dame Lois' success at the polls in 1963. Dame Lois would rarely canvass without her canvassing team of Henry and Richards.

“Recently Mrs. Henry was honoured by the PLP at the party's 50th anniversary celebration that was held in November 2013. At that time, Mrs. Henry was given a standing ovation by the party leader and others in attendance for her long and dedicated service to the party.

Until her illness some years ago, Mrs Henry rarely missed a Central Committee meeting and could be counted on to serve the party in various capacities, including providing baked goods for sale to help raise funds.”

According to the statement, party leader Marc Bean was “saddened” to hear of the news of Mrs Henry's death and recalled how he was proud to have honoured her with a special 50th anniversary pin on behalf of the party last November. He offered condolences to her children, grandchildren and other family members.
