Tourist, 60, dies after crash

A 60-year-old US tourist has died after the livery rental cycle he was riding collided with a wall and tree on Cockburn Road, Sandys, this afternoon.

Daniel Bruce Laubacher, of Wilmington, Delaware, was visiting the Island having arrived on a Norwegian Cruise line ship. He and a 41-year-old woman passenger were travelling east along Cockburn Road when the cycle appeared to veer into the westbound lane before striking the wall and tree around 1.20pm, according to police.

Mr Laubacher was taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital suffering chest pains. He was prounched dead at 8.15pm.

Police tonight said a family liaison officer has been assigned to assist Mr Laubacher’s family.

The woman passenger on the bike received minor lacerations in the crash.

Sergeant Collin Paynter, of the Roads Policing Unit, is the lead investigator and any witnesses to the accident, or anyone who may have information to the last movements of Mr Laubacher prior to the collision, is asked to contact him on 295-0011.

This is the 5th road traffic fatality in Bermuda this year. The Bermuda Police Service has extended its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
