Community day to promote volunteerism

Families are being encouraged to come together to assist local charities next month when The Centre on Philanthropy hosts the Allied World Family Community Day.

According to a spokeswoman the free annual event, now in its third year, will include food, games, entertainment and prizes. A total of 25 charities are set to take part in the event, 12 of which will be seeking assistance with various projects.

Among the projects seeking support are the Amnesty International Bermuda’s Write for Rights campaign, a Keep Bermuda Beautiful effort to repaint repurposed waste bins and a mosaic art project with Phenomenal People.

“Families work together to complete the projects during the afternoon of fun activities,” the spokeswoman said. “The remainder of the charities will feature information booths where families can learn about the cause and volunteer opportunities for the future, in an activity they are interested in.”

Radio personality Nikita Robinson will emcee the event, while Troika JD Siid James and Gombey troupes are all scheduled to provide entertainment.

Executive director of the Centre, Elaine Williams, said: “Allied World and The Centre on Philanthropy’s goal is to offer an event that makes volunteerism appealing and fun for the whole family, while providing children with the opportunity to become agents of change in their community by thoughtfully contributing to causes they care about.

“Students are also able to gain Community Service hours by participating in the event. We hope that everyone comes out.”

The event is set to take place on June 8 at the National Sports Centre’s North Field, but family volunteers are asked to sign up by May 30 at www.volunteer.bm.
