Pianist: Help me reach my goal

Fundraising: James Richardson

Bermudian pianist James Richardson is hoping to take his career to the next level, but first he needs your support.

Mr Richardson has launched an online fundraising campaign on Indiegogo with the goal of raising $32,700 to allow him to move to the UK, where he will produce two new albums and work on an initiative to create opportunities for other Bermudian musicians.

“By supporting my campaign know that you will have a huge impact not only on what’s possible for me as a musician, but on many other Bermudian musicians who dream of exploring their music outside of our small island,” he wrote on the campaign website.

“We’ve got some awesome talent here and it would be great to expose them to the world, and the world to them. Your contribution has that power.”

According to the campaign website, the bulk of the money raised would cover his move to the UK and the shipping of his studio equipment, but the fundraiser would also support a pair of new albums.

“Since creating my first album, Beautiful Things, in 2011, I’ve been working on a lot of new music as a solo artist and with a number of other Bermudian musicians,” he said. “This work will form the basis of my next two albums. The first will be soul soothing music, similar to Beautiful Things, but with a more produced feel with more instrumentation and vocal work. The second will feature original Bermudian music and musicians.”

The fundraiser will also support the creation of a website — BermudaMusiciansInLondon.com — which would be aimed at helping Bermudian artists who decide to make the move to the UK.

“When I was planning my move, I found that there’s a lot of information out there, but it was a real challenge sorting through it all,” he wrote. “With BermudaMusiciansInLondon.com I intend on sharing with my fellow local musicians valuable information that will help them also take advantage of the opportunities London has to offer musicians.”

The campaign, which runs until July 9, has so far raised around $2,000 thanks to the contributions of 12 donors.
