Teens admit college fight

Three teenagers this morning admitted brawling on the Bermuda College campus, while a fourth was granted a trial date.

Khalif Williams, 17, Taijuan Davis, 18, and Makai Jacobs, 18, all pleaded guilty to taking part in a fight on December 10 last year, but co-defendant Kwanjah Burrows, 17, maintained his innocence.

The court heard officers were on duty providing security for the college when, minutes before noon, they noticed a group of young men fighting outside Student Hall where students were in the process of taking their GEDs.

The officers stepped in to break up the fight, using Captor spray to stop one of the teens, and arrested all four.

The teenagers appeared in court the following morning and pleaded not guilty to charges of taking part in a fight, but during an appearance in Magistrates’ Court this morning three of the four reversed their pleas.

Defence lawyer Nancy Vieira, representing Jacobs and Davis, said the fight erupted as a result of an altercation between Davis’ sister and the other two defendants, while defence lawyer Mark Daniels said Williams was struck and “reacted”.

However, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner repeatedly asked the lawyers for more information about why the fight broke out, saying: “They are there for their further education, not to get involved in a brawl.”

Mr Warner ordered pre-sentencing reports for Williams, Davis and Jacobs, and set Mr Burrows a trial date in August.
