Fahy, grocers clear the air over discount scheme
Home Affairs Minister Michael Fahy described a meeting with grocers and wholesalers regarding the future of a discount grocery scheme as “fruitful and frank”.
While Sen Fahy said previously that concerns had been expressed about the sustainability of the scheme, which offers customers at the Island’s three largest supermarket chains a ten percent discount on Wednesdays, he said yesterday that the grocers want to support the community.
Involved in the meeting were representatives from Butterfield and Vallis, Lindos Group of Companies, BGA, AC Brewer, The Marketplace, The Supermart Ltd and Viking Foods.
“The meeting was very constructive and it is obvious that grocers and wholesalers are sensitive to the needs of the people and remain willing to help in this regard,” Sen Fahy said. “We all committed to meet again in four to six weeks to discuss potential solutions which collaboratively we feel will be best for the community.
“Accordingly, I will continue to keep the public informed as we approach year-end as to how we plan to move forward.”
