Bermuda ball at US club

A country club in the US celebrated the Island with a Bermuda-themed ball — and raised funds for a rehabilitation hospital in the process.

The Country Club of Virginia’s 58th annual Bal du Bois was described as ‘An Evening in Bermuda’, including Bermuda moon gates, model houses with stepped roofs, valet parkers wearing Bermuda shorts and signs of ships which have sunk in island waters.

About 1,200 guests enjoyed typical Bermudian cuisine, notably with English, African and Portuguese heritage.

The Bal du Bois is an annual fundraiser aimed to raise money for the Sheltering Arms Rehabilitation Hospital — a centre providing physical rehabilitation and wellness services.

The Chairmen of the event were Callie Brackett and Carter Williams.

Mr Williams said “Over the past 5 years, we have raised over half a million dollars for the Sheltering Arms Hospital.

“Callie and I chose the theme Bermuda because it is a place near and dear to our hearts.

“My grandparents lived on the island and I grew up visiting. It is one of Callie’s family’s favorite places on earth to visit.

“We wanted our guests to travel through the gardens of historic Georgetown, down the main streets of Hamilton, through the historic moon gates that adorn the Island and of course the famous Coral beaches.

“This was the first time Bermuda had ever been a theme and was widely touted as one of the best!”

Previous themes for the ball have included Venice, Egypt, the French Gardens as well broader themes such as “Enchanted Woodlands” or “Summer Garden.”
