City to expand parking zones

Pay-and-display parking fees are being imposed on all roads in the City of Hamilton from Monday.

Every street will be affected by the tariffs, including those where parking has traditionally been free.

The charges were announced yesterday by the Corporation of Hamilton, which said the city would be carved up into three different zones.

Each zone will have its own fee structure.

The charges are expected to provide a much-needed revenue boost to the cash-strapped Corporation of Hamilton.

“Effective Monday August 18, the pay and display zones in Hamilton will change,” said the Corporation’s chief operating officer Edward Benevides. “The city will be divided into three pay and display zones. In some instances, the cost to park has been reduced, in some locations the parking rates stay the same, and in other instances parking rates will be introduced.”

Zone one covers all roads between Front Street and Church Street, including Church Street, and parking will cost $2 an hour. From Church Street to Dundonald Street will be zone two, with fees set at $1.50 an hour. Zone three, from Dundonald Street to North Street, will cost $1 an hour.

But there is good news for motorists, with some parking charges being cut.

“There will be reduced all-day parking rates,” Mr Benevides said. “All-day parking at Bulls Head and Elliott Street car parks will be reduced to $5 a day or $1 an hour up to five hours.

“After five hours in these car parks, parking will have no further charge. Easy Park meters, mobile applications and pay and display tickets will continue to be in use in these car parks and will be adjusted to reflect the new price structure.”

Users of EasyPark meters will need to have their device resynced. This can be done online, by visiting an EasyPark merchant or at City Hall.

The update will be available from Saturday with a mobile update from Monday.

A new sticker for devices outlining the zones will be available from merchants and City Hall, by the end of the month at the latest.

The Corporation warned that motorists without valid parking risked being clamped or fined.

“Signs will be erected around the city to ensure motorists will know which parking zone they are in,” Mr Benevides said.

“To avoid being clamped or ticketed, motorists are urged to read the signage on the sidewalks and in car parks before they park and leave their vehicles.”
