People’s Campaign to host ‘status’ meetings

Chief Justice Ian Kawaley

Grassroots activist group the People’s Campaign has announced three town hall meetings to be held next week on the contentious issue of Permanent Resident’s Certificate holders and Bermuda status.

The group will hold meetings at 6.30pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Allen Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church Hall, Whitney Institute Middle School and St Paul AME Church’s Centennial Hall respectively.

The issue came to the fore after Chief Justice Ian Kawaley overturned an appeal by the Ministry of Home Affairs against two PRC holders being granted status.

The applications were made under the little-used section 20B (2) B of the Immigration and Protection Act — a provision which the Opposition Progressive Labour Party sought to have deleted.

However, Government didn’t support the move, with Junior Home Affairs Minister Sylvan Richards later arguing that retroactively striking down the section of the law would be unfair and redundant.

The controversial ramifications of the Supreme Court decision already sparked a march by the People’s Campaign on July 25, and was the subject of three town hall meetings by the PLP.

It’s been estimated 1,400 PRC holders could be eligible for status.

• Meanwhile, The People’s Campaign Youth Empowerment Symposium will be held tomorrow at St. Paul’s Centennial Hall between 9.30am and 3.00pm.

A spokesperson said the Symposium aimed “to encourage young Bermudians to become more involved in their social and economic wellbeing by creating personal value and value for the community.”

“The People’s Campaign recognises the importance of developing the youth and the vital role they play in moving the country forward. All Bermudians, especially those younger members in our society who fall between 16-35 years of age are encouraged to attend.”
