Bermudian bailed in road death case

A Bermudian driver arrested in connection with a fatal crash in the UK has been bailed.

The 69-year-old Southampton man was the driver of a car that collided with a motorcyclist on Sunday.

The 20-year-old motorcyclist died as a result of the accident that took place near the village of Bury in West Sussex. The driver of the Volvo V40 hatchback was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has now been released on unconditional bail until September 1. His passenger, a 64-year-old Bermudian woman, suffered shock, whiplash and a fractured collarbone.

She was taken to hospital but released without needing to be kept in overnight.

A spokesman for Sussex Police told The Royal Gazette: “The driver of the Volvo V40 hatchback car involved in the collision was a 69-year-old man from Southampton, Bermuda.

“He has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and bailed until 1 September.”

The name of the motorcyclist is expected to be released today. The driver, reported by police to be holidaying in the UK, sustained shock, while the passenger was also treated in hospital.
