Back to school community effort really cuts it

Feeling the buzz: A'Vari Raynor- Hall, age ten, from Prospect Primary School, gets a free buzzed head at St Paul’s Church. This year was the 2nd annual Free Haircut Giveback, organised by Dwayne and Wayne Caines

More than 200 boys were treated to a free back to school haircut yesterday as part of a community effort to help families.

Fifteen barbers volunteered to cut the hair of 230 boys, while more than 425 book bags were handed out to youngsters.

The event, at St Paul’s Centennial Hall in Hamilton, was organised by brothers Dwayne and Wayne Caines and 5 Star Barbershop. “The Caines Brothers and 5 Star Barbershop Back to School Extravaganza can only be characterised as an overwhelming success,” Dwayne Caines said last night.

“We would like to thank the 15 barbers who volunteered their time and talents, as well as the 75 volunteers that assisted over the last few days.

“Special thanks to our major sponsors Trinity Sound, South Shore Hospitality Group, Smash, Sunshine Company, Security Associates, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc and St Paul’s AME Church.

“It would be remiss of us not to thank the scores of everyday people who donated money, bags, food and time to ensure this event was a success. We could not have done it without you and for that we are truly grateful. This was truly a community effort.”

Mr Caines expressed his thanks to Premier Michael Dunkley, PLP Opposition leader Marc Bean and the other MPs who attended the event to show their support.

“It is the hope of 5 Star Barbershop and the Caines Brothers that this simple experience will signal a positive start to the new school year for our boys and girls, as we believe in the future of Bermuda as well as indicate what can be done when we all work together to help each other,” Mr Caines said. “Thank you to everyone for making today a success. Together we can make a difference in Bermuda.”
